Elevator Speech

Do you have a 30 second elevator speech? What happens if you run into someone who you know can help you, but they are in a hurry to get to a meeting?

Or they would love to visit, but the airplane is going to pull out of the gate in less than a couple of minutes? Chance encounters happen far more frequently than you might imagine. They also happen to active networkers on a very frequent basis. They take place in airport lounges, train stations, subways, ball games and so on.

So here are a couple of tips you might try:

1. Always carry some personal business cards. Be sure to give them out at every opportunity.
2. Always ask for a business card.
3. When you get home, pace that contact information in your data base.
4. Send a quick note to tell this person you enjoyed meeting him / her.
5. Always be upbeat and positive – no one like a grump or negativity.
6. Develop your 30 second speech for those chance encounters. Know it cold.

A quick example:

“Hi xxxxx, what a pleasant surprise running into you here! I know time is short; can I have one of your business cards? Here is one of mine. I just retired from the military / am considering a job change and looking for work in the xxxxx field. If you hear of anything can we chat? Life is good and the family is doing great. How are you making out and what are you planning in the near future?”

Listen to the response and remember it.

“Now that I have your card, I will call you to firm up a convenient time for us to get together and catch up.”

Say all of the above like you really mean it and be sure to smile. It conveys warmth and sincerity. Above all, follow through!

You actually never know when you will run into someone who will be able to help you, is looking for someone to hire, or will simply be a potentially valuable connection in the future.
