If you are approaching 50, or over 50, then there are issues and things you might want to consider if you are thinking about changing jobs, or changing career directions. You need to remember that it is likely you will be talking to HR folks that are younger than you – so yes – you will run into bias. It will be hidden, but it might be there. So .....
If you are contemplating a change in careers, be it retire from military service, or simply a change of companies, you need to do some serious thinking.
This is probably the most underrated and yet most important aspect of your job search. Everyone knows someone somewhere. But, do you actually have a list of whom you know and where they are located?
You know you are leaving the military for new horizons. Or, you already are working as a civilian and you have a sneaky suspicion that you might be in line for downsizing.
If you are retiring with a pension, it will help. If you are married and your spouse is working that helps. But, you are still going to notice the lack of regular income unless you move directly into some type of employment.
So, you are sitting at home one evening and the telephone rings. It is a call from that company you have always wanted to work for. “Can you come in for an interview next Tuesday morning?” Now what?
Congratulations! Looks like you got the job! If you were fortunate, during your interview someone mentioned money. While not a complete indicator, it shows there is real interest in you as an employee. How do you respond?
Probably more words have been written on this subject than any other portion of an employment search. There are experts who are true experts. There are self appointed experts. If you are tired of reading advice on résumés – scroll to the bottom of this section and read the last paragraph.
Ok, you have made the decision that you have served your country and it is time to move on. There are several reasons why you have come to that conclusion. You have served in many positions and feel that you have "been there, done that" or maybe you feel your career has stagnated and that you are being left behind. It may even be that the grass appears to be greener on the other side of the "fence". All of these issues create a "push, pull" effect.
